After the samba and tango, the best-known South American rhythm may be the cumbia, which hails from such countries as Venezuela, Equador, and Columbia, and is closely related to the waltzes (vals) and polkas of Peru. Cumbia is a folk dance rhythm with a driving beat and hypnotic quality accented by the use of such instruments as organ, harp, and accordion. There is quaint, rustic, authentic cumbia as well as contemporary and adventurous cumbia. Buying: Look for anything by harpist Hugo Blanco ("Cumbia con Arpa") and anything on the top Latin labels. Zurita on Remo is one. |
