Coney Island Mermaid Parade '98
About two dozen known Baltimorons attended Coney Island's annual Mermaid Festival in 1998, half of them NYC-resident expatriates, half as entourage celebrating Spoon Popkin and Dan Van Allen's fiery participation. A brief rain phased none (Dan, promoter of Baltimore's two best festivals, has a reputation for eliciting rain), and blasts from a conch-shell trumpet heralded our triumph over the forces of nature and plain good sense. Following was a "sunken-boat" party, on the trek to which this correspondent briefly slipped into a gorge.
